Original bassist Jon Bavin also collaborated in writing two of the new compositions. ‘Cold Reading’ was produced by Tony Lowe, who subsequently, since 1972, worked as a musician with the likes of Julian Lennon, Roger Daltrey, Simon Townshend, Visage, Pet Shop Boys, Modern English and Phil Ramone and has produced artists such as Simon Townshend, Flying Colours, Toyah & John Foxx. Tony Lowe is also the Creator, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist for all the ESP Project albums – collaborating with numerous artists such as Peter Coyle, Mark Brzezicki, David Cross, David Jackson, Phil Spalding, Steve Gee, Mickey Simmonds, John Young, Yumi Hara, Alison Fleming, and more. With the two re-recordings, the arrangements really didn’t need changing and so I re-recorded everything with a slightly more up to date approach to sound quality. The original recordings were a little rough around the edges as the album had to be recorded pretty much in one day. But the energy and enthusiasm was there, and I hope I captured some of that. I never saw a band that could merge classical music and rock the way Bram Stoker did.

Writing new material with Tony and Will was another matter. It was a case of recreating some of the original qualities and although the music is complex the new songs seem to flow easily with the three of us.

We also looked at a different side to Bram Stoker, the author, and found he was an interesting man with a penchant for the occult and Victorian spiritualism, along with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and William B. Yeats. Although Bram Stoker was interested in mesmerism he was also wary of occult fraud (in which Cold Reading plays a part) believing in the replacement of superstition with more scientific ideas. This overall theme is reflected in the album, Cold Reading.”

Check out the promo video.

All reviews linked here.

The music is available as a CD digipak and on download formats.

Sounds like: ELP, Pink Floyd, Camel and early Genesis

HISTORY and CURRENT NEWS

Bram Stoker was one of the first prog rock bands on the music scene in the 1970s, often compared to early Genesis and Yes. The band was formed by Keyboard player Tony Bronsdon in 1969; they soon built up a strong and devoted following at live shows. Playing the Marquee in London, they were supported by a little known band called ‘Queen’. They played regularly in London at The Roundhouse, The Marquee, The Greyhound – Croydon and The Speakeasy. Touring clubs, colleges and University in the UK and Holland they were appreciated by many well known artists of the time.

Bram Stoker enjoyed significant interest from the music industry during the period from 1969 to 1972 and this is shown in the wake of album “Heavy Rock Spectacular” – from its original vinyl release by Windmill Records in 1972, the album became a collector’s items. Inevitable bootlegging ensued and CD copies of “Heavy Rock Spectacular” appeared on various labels world-wide. The latest line-up is still performing some of the songs from Cold Reading and the current personnel in the live band are: Tony Bronsdon – Keyboards and Vocals, Barry Hines – Bass Guitar and Vocals, Neil Richardson – Guitar, and Stephen Underhill – Drums.

For Press and PR enquiries for Cold Reading please contact sunn creative.
